CHAPTER TWELVE
Wren opened the cabinet under the sink in the kitchen.
âSomething I can help you with, Delacroix?â came Slaterâs amused voice.
She riffled through the contents under the sink. âJust checking out your household cleaners. You donât have any bleach here.â
âI keep bleach in the laundry room,â said Slater.
âHmm,â she said. âWhereâs that?â
âOff the garage,â said Slater.
âRight, you have a garage,â said Wren. âWhich is handy. You could drive in, get something out of your trunk, and no one in the neighborhood would even know that youâd brought it in.â
âI guess so,â said Slater. âI donât think my neighbors are much interested in what Iâm doing, though.â
âYou have cameras all over,â said Wren. âIs that your thing? You like to film things? Do you film yourself with the victims?â
âOh, here we go again.â Slater smiled widely. âYou think Iâm the killer. Let me get this straight, Delacroix. You think that I killed a bunch of people and did it in such a way so that I would be sure to be assigned the case because of the fanfictionââ
âThe fanfic you wrote,â said Wren, loudly, hoping his cameras would pick it up. If they could get a warrant, they could watch all the footage.
âRight,â said Slater. âItâs all me. Youâve got a weird thing about me, huh?â
âYup,â said Wren. âJust like youâve got a thing about me and Caius. You enjoy anything youâve seen thus far?â
Slaterâs jaw twitched.
Wren smiled, going back to the cleaners. âSo, hereâs what I think, Slater. I think that you kill them in a different car, and then you wrap up the bodies and transfer them to your car to bring home. Then, you clean them up and rape the bodies and thenââ
âIf you think this about me, why are you staying in my house?â
âWhy do you have cameras in the house, Slater? Why do you want to watch?â
Slater chuckled. âLet me ask you a question, Delacroix. Why do you like dead bodies?â
She snorted. âOh, no, weâre not going to play that game. Itâs not the same thing.â
âYou ever feel a⦠a pull? As though youâre drawn to something by a powerful force, and no matter how hard you try to fight it, you simply find yourself being tugged toward it?â
Wren pulled out a spray bottle of Lysol and turned it over in her hands.
âI think you have,â said Slater. âI think you know exactly what Iâm talking about.â
âYou make choices, Slater.â
âSure,â said Slater. âEveryone does.â
âYou choose to kill people.â
âI donât kill anyone,â said Slater. âDoes the killer weâre looking for choose it, though? Thatâs an interesting question. It doesnât seem to me that anyone would choose to do a thing like that. It seems to me like the risks of the entire enterprise would outweigh any possible benefits.â
âI donât think he sees risks,â said Wren, unsure of why sheâd switched into talking in the third person about the man who was right in front of her.
âHe sees them,â said Slater. âHe understands it all, but it doesnât matter to him, because that pull, itâs like the tide.
